Direct connection between CPU to NVMe SSD over PCIe bus
Reduces software stack latency
Optimized for server caching and high performance storage applications

Supermicro embraced NVMe technology at an early stage, positioning us with a strong suite of application optimized NVMe platforms that deliver extreme throughput with greater energy efficiency and reliability for performance critical markets," says Charles Liang, President and CEO of Supermicro.

Supermicro FatTwin SuperServer F627R2-FT+Intel's new solid state drive PCIe family will show up in Supermicro's 1U WIO, 2U Data Center Optimized (DCO), 2U EX DP 32 DIMM, 2U TwinPro, and the 3U 11x PCI-E slot and 4U FatTwin SuperServer units. While this is obviously a wide selection of server racks to choose from, all are designed for higher-end computing needs. Supermicro specifically mentions applications in virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), Very Large Database (VLDB) and hyperscale computing operations.

The entry level SuperServer, the 1U WIO, is the most compact option, but seems to still pack a punch. The 1U WIO units include:

  • Dual Intel Xeon E5-2600 v2 processor.

  • Supports up to 1TB ECC DDR3 RAM.

  • 1x PCIe 3.0 (x16).

  • 2x NVMe PCIe SSD/SATA3 drive bays.

  • 8x 12Gb/s SAS3 drive bays.

On the other end of the spectrum we have the 4U FatTwin SuperServer. The FatTwin is Supermicro's largest NVMe server offering and has the following specs:

  • Dual Intel Xeon E5-2600 v2 processor.

  • Supports up to 1TB ECC DDR3 RAM.

  • 1x PCIe 3.0 (x16).

  • 1x PCIe 3.0 (x8).

  • 1x PCIe 2.0 (x4).

  • 6x 2.5" hot-swappable SATA HDDs.

The 4U FatTwin also includes front I/O support for 2x GbE, 2x USB 2.0 ports and a VGA connector.

"We are currently in the process of extending NVMe across an even wider range of solutions to drive economies of scale and offer this technology as a new standard feature," says Liang. "Our close collaboration with Intel to support the launch of their new SSD PCIe family delivers customers an extensive selection of highly optimized NVMe solutions that will radically accelerate business as well as overall ROI."
