The SC836 storage family supports 16HDD bays.
Both can be configured as standalone storage servers, head-node storage servers, or as
JBOD (Just-a-Bunch-Of-Drive) Server configurations, depending upon the motherboard and
cascading options chosen.
A key element of the Supermicro design is the intelligent backplane. A 28-port intelligent SAS
expander switch, the LSI SASX28 is used to establish the SAS connections between the drives
and the other devices on the backplane.

In an E1 system, each drive on the backplane is connected to the expander switch via a direct SAS link (16 links for the 836). Twelve additional SAS links to/from the
expander (4+4+4) are routed to three (3) mini SAS 4i connectors on the backplane for access by the system. This allows easy connection to a SAS controller (either an add-on HBA or built-into the motherboard) via a four-lane mini-SAS cable and also easy cascading to additional systems via the other four-lane connector. The SAS expander chip discovers its connectivity at power-on
and by nature of its SAS switch architecture preserves full bandwidth for each drive.
