The SC836 storage family supports 16HDD bays.
Both can be configured as standalone storage servers, head-node storage servers, or as
JBOD (Just-a-Bunch-Of-Drive) Server configurations, depending upon the motherboard and
cascading options chosen.
A key element of the Supermicro design is the intelligent backplane. A 28-port intelligent SAS
expander switch, the LSI SASX28 is used to establish the SAS connections between the drives
and the other devices on the backplane. Single-port systems, referred to in this document as “E1”
systems use a single expander switch. Dual-port systems, referred to as “E2” systems employ
two expander switches.

An CSE-836 E2 system provides dual port connectivity to each drive, similar to more expensive Fibre
Channel architectures. E2 systems support failover and load balancing features. In an E2 system,
each drive connector has two SAS links, one directly to each expander. Note that while SAS and
SATA drives can physically occupy the same backplane connector, only SAS drives, not SATA
drives, can access the second SAS link. As in an E1 system, twelve lanes (4+4+4) from each
expander are routed to two sets of three (3) mini SAS 4i connectors on the backplane for access
by the system to provide additional paths for failover and load balancing. System software
determines usage.

Multiple Host Bus Adapters can be installed in server head-node to increase overall capacity or
for redundancy (or both). Each HBA can support up to 122 drives. The following table shows
storage capacities for 1, 2 and 3 SAS controllers using drive capacity available today. Note that it
is not advisable to mix SAS and SATA drives within the same enclosure, but SAS and SATA
JBODS may be included within the same storage subsystem.
